Film

As much as I want to say, “Watch movies, TONS of ‘em!” and leave it at that, I fear that I can’t.

Motivation, understanding, and genuine interest do wonders do they not?

What makes discussing film so difficult to discuss as a whole is that I am of the opinion that it’s so much easier to speak of the qualities and ills of genres within the entire arena of film itself; but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Film as a medium reaches and has reached a broader audience than anything else that makes up the content of this site, which I suppose makes my interest in it rather anomalous by comparison. Then again, a rather large portion of what both I and the rest of the world would deem as being “other worldly” has been created for the medium of film. It is for this reason that I’m drawn to film. Not just to passively enjoy it, but to actively engage myself with it.

It almost goes without saying that the reception of and interest in film as a whole has a relationship with its audience that is quite antonymous of the relationship between hardcore or mecha anime and their fans. Perhaps it’s this very facet of film that I find so interesting. Stated simply, hardcore is a genre within a genre, as is mecha. Within hardcore for example, there are even more genres that stem from its initial foundation. Film however, is made up of numerous genres but is itself a medium, a beginning. Aside from silent works, film, as it is known historically and contemporaneously, incorporates audible and visual elements that are nearly endless.

Now I think we’re beginning to get closer to a better portraying of film as a wholly worthwhile area of study, and not just something to just barely receptively respond to.

Genres (a terribly incomplete outline)

I wish it were easy to define every genre, but such is not the case. Hopefully laying out such a straight-to-the-point overview will spark some interest in a film that you otherwise would’ve forgotten to check out. I’ll be racking my brain to come up with as many genres as I can, so check back from time to time to see where I’m at with the essay and genre list!
